Serhiy Karpenko was born in 1965 in Kozatyn, Vinnitska oblast. The artist is a self-taught wood carver. He discovered his talent in early childhood, while in school carving miniature figures from chalk in the age of 8. At the age of 18, during an internship in Russian town of Ufa, he purchased his first set of wood carving tools. In 1993 Serhiy came across biblical album of Dore's etchings. Impressed with the album the artist produced his first bas-relief woodcarving, depicting Christ with Samaritan by water spring, which opened the series of figurative religious artworks. Since 1997 Karpenko's carving activity has grown into a full scale artistic profession. In 2000 the artist was awarded with the medal of St. Volodymyr the Great by Patriarch Filaret. In 2004 Karpenko becomes a member of the carvers union of Ukraine. His art was exhibited nationally and internationally since 1999 and could be found in many private and public collections, including Taras Shevchenko National Museum, Ukrainian Home and Ukrainian Parliament in Kyiv.
