This chess set is a detailed replica of an original ivory set manufactured by the British ‘Jacques’ company, circa 1850, and purchased at a 1990s London auction.
English chess master, Howard Saunton, promoted this set at the first international chess tournament in 1851. It’s clearly distinguishable pieces soon became the competition standard known as the ‘Staunton’ set. Though red and ivory pieces were the convention up until the 20th C., other light and dark variations were used throughout history. The maharajahs and nabobs of the Indian subcontinent even played with green and ivory pieces! The red and ivory Grandmaster’s set is for players, for lovers of beauty and art and for interiors of refined style that require a classic game board or table on display at all times.
